When repeated, affirmations can bring about positive changes in an aspect of your life.
Positive thinking and planning in the months and weeks leading up to an event are critical elements to setting the stage for a successful race. When I once asked a female friend of mine who was attempting to make the US Olympic Triathlon Team in an email what she does to prepare mentally before a race, she replied back, “Visualization and affirmation.” Visualization means visualizing the race in your mind as to how you want it to happen. Affirmation means to write down positive action statements about what your race experience will be like.
Visualization: What are the positive things that you want to happen during the sequence of your event? Write them down and review them in your mind each day leading up to the event.
Example: I’m not a strong swimmer, so I seed myself to the side of the main pack. I warm up easily to relax. When the race starts, I am not crowded and am able to comfortably find my pace. I am able to draft behind a small group and come out of the water with a new swim PR.
Affirmations are positive statements made about a future you that you want to be in, but written as if you already are. When repeated, affirmations can bring about positive changes in an aspect of your life. Rather than write, “I will…” say “I do…”
Example affirmations that I’ve used in the past:
Now, write down three affirmations of whom you would like to be, but written as if you already are that person.
Happy training!
