Revolution3 Quassy Pro Preview

This weekend marks Rev3’s annual premier event, REV3 Quassy, held in beautiful Middlebury, Connecticut, at the Quassy Amusement Park. With a family-friendly, fun-for-all-ages atmosphere, and one of the strongest professional fields to assemble this season, a big show of athletic ability is sure to play out at Quassy 2013.

The professional for the 5th annual REV3 Quassy looks as fierce as ever, with 27 men and 17 women. Featuring a total $100,000 prize purse and high series points, this race always attracts some of the world’s best triathletes. Professionals will race the Half distance; Age Group athletes have the option to race either Olympic or Half distance.
MEN’S FIELD
Headlining the men’s field is returning-champion Richie Cunningham. He also won the 2012 Rev3 Pro Series, and has proven to be a perpetual threat at all REV3 races. With a well-rounded approach to racing, Cunningham has fast closing speed and a penchant for deadly run splits.  Bevan Docherty, two-time silver medalist from New Zealand is sure to a factor with a recent step up in distance and a strong swim bike run portfolio.

Two certified super-bikers are headed to Quassy– Andrew Starykowicz, and Maik Twelsiek. These men are known for blistering speed on the bike, in an attempt to put a significant time gap on the rest of the field before T2. Starykowicz won the Rev3 series in 2011, and has to be considered a top contender on strength courses. Starykowicz had an early 2013 season win at Puerto Rico 70.3. Twelsiek has been flying relatively low under the radar recently, but has a history of biking strength. He won Ironman Lake Placid in 2009, and has had a string of top-5 finishes since then. With the dissolving of his former Commerzbank triathlon team, Twelsiek has new sponsors, a new outlook, and new motivation.

Joe Gambles will toe the line again in 2013, having placed second at the race in 2012. His significant experience at Quassy will certainly play to his advantage. Look out for ITU-star, Tim Don. Hailing from the U.K., the 35-year-old Don has crossed over into more non-draft races and is a 5-time British National Champion.
Also expected to be in the mix are Eric Limkemann, Andrew Yoder and Christian Kemp.
WOMEN’S FIELD
This year’s women’s field once again features Mirinda Carfrae. While no introduction should be necessary, Carfrae is an Ironman world champion, 70.3 world champion, and has won Quassy three out of the four years the race has been held. Her quick running turnover and mental tenacity have closed the race with amazing speed every year.

We also expect good performances from Heather Jackson and Meredith Kessler. Jackson is fresh off of a trio of wins at Oceanside 70.3, Escape from Alcatraz, and Wildflower. Historically, she packs a huge bike-run punch, and her performance at Quassy is expected to be no different. Kessler is also on a hot streak, having won both Ironman New Zealand, and the 70.3 US Pro Championship in St. George, UT. Her balanced swim, bike, and running ability allow her to play out a variety of race strategies.

Heather Wurtele placed second at Quassy in 2012, trailing Carfrae by only 17 seconds. So far in 2013, she has placed 2nd at 70.3 St. George, 4th at Abu Dhabi, and took the win at 70.3 Panama. Also watch for super-runner, Kelly Williamson, a podium finisher at Quassy in years past, to push the pace hard all the way to the finish.

The women’s field is wide open in 2013, with each athlete having their strength, experience and skill on the day to play. Annabel Luxford, Sam Warriner, or Laurel Wassner also should factor into the day’s race.
Quassy is on of the races in the 2013 series. This year’s series is different than years past, highlighting three Olympic distance venues (Knoxville, Wisconsin, and Maine), and four Half distance venues (Quassy, Williamsburg, Branson, and Florida). Professional athletes must compete in a minimum of three races to be eligible for the series, with loyalty points awarded for additional races.
