Shannon Florea, 35, of Lexington, Ky., placed third at Rev3 Knoxville. With fast feet and a quick bike cadence, Florea is a top age-grouper. As a fit chick, it’s easy to see why she breezes past her competitors. A previous track and cross country collegiate athlete at Transylvania University, the transformation into adult triathlete was perhaps inevitable.
However, training isn’t the main focus of the day. Florea is a full-time faculty physician serving as a rheumatologist at the University of Kentucky. Trading scrubs for bike shorts, she must maintain that work/triathlon balance. “It is very tricky, but I am a minimalist when it comes to training. Having a purpose for every workout, periodization and maximizing my available time is essential,” she says.
That’s not all—add in a work/triathlon/life balance for good measure…she’s a mother of two. “I also have learned that I have little recovery working all day then running after two toddlers when I get home,” Florea says. Luckily, her supportive and athletic husband keeps her sane. “Sometimes it gets crazy in our family running with strollers, biking with trailers and on trainers, and doing modified TRX with the boys… but to me this is the best life.”
Florea enjoys the Rev3 reaces and plans to come back for more. “The first Rev3 race I did was Knoxville three years ago and was so impressed with it. I just signed up to do Rev3 Williamsburg and I am sure to add more Olympics, 70.3s, and maybe throw in a full distance later in the season if I feel up to it,” she says. She even hopes to participate in the age group nationals in May 2014 in Knoxville.
