A first time triathlete this weekend at REV3 Wisconsin Dells. Her boyfriend Ben Collins is a professional triathlete for the last 5 years and Abby saw her first triathlon while cheering on Ben. Now she is taking the starting line this weekend and shared a few of her pre race thoughts.
Hometown: Chicago, Illinois
Why a triathlon? Why REV3?
After sitting on the sidelines and watching a bunch of triathlons and seeing how much Ben loves racing and how awesome the atmosphere is at REV3 races, I really wanted to try racing one myself. This summer while I am between semesters at school seemed like the perfect time to give it a try.
What are your goals for the event?
My goal is to have fun and hopefully finish in less than 4 hours.
What advice does Ben give you?
Yes it hurts because you are working hard, but you can do it, you can do more than you think you can.
What is your athletic background?
I was on the US national rifle team for several years and a competitive swimmer growing up. The running and biking are new to me but I’m really enjoying them.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in New York City, but have since lived in New Jersey, Colorado and Chicago where I currently live at attend medical school.
Favorite book you have read?
Too many to choose from! But lately I’ve been reading a lot of medical and health care policy books while studying. Med school creates a reading list all its own. Though it has been really interesting to see how much of what we learn in medical school is applicable to training in sports.
I love lots of different kinds of food. I have a major sweet tooth, which helped motivate me to get in shape in the first place. Lately, I have been really into green smoothies. It’s a great way to get some extra veggies into your diet, especially when you are on the run and don’t have time to eat a leisurely salad.
Favorite discipline to train for (swim, bike run)?
I like to run outside with Odin when the weather is nice. There’s something really relaxing about running through a park in the sunshine with a big, silly dog. Even better when Ben decides to do his easy runs with us, though that makes the runs a lot harder for me!
Favorite post workout activity?
I love having home made pizza night with friends after a good workout, but sitting on the couch with my dog watching TV is really nice as well.
What has your training been like?
I generally do one workout a day, five or six days a week. Usually some combination of two bikes, two runs, two swims. Each workout is about an hour to an hour and a half long and varies in intensity.
Do you train with your co-workers or friends?
I do sometimes. Training is more fun with other people. I’ve gotten to meet some cool triathletes getting ready for this race.
Your motivational song?
Livin’ on a Prayer, it always gets me dancing.
