East Coaster Ellen Wexler made swift gains in the sport of triathlon. Just a few years ago, she couldn’t even multitask on the bike—she’d fall if trying to eat a gel. With no athletic background, she’s now a serious competitor.
Recently, she competed in the Rev3 Williamsburg 70.3 and is eyeing another Rev3 half or full in future. “Rev3 creates a race experience that is all about the athlete and celebration of the hard work that comes together on race day, for the triathlete and supporters,” Wexler says.
It hasn’t always been an easy road. In an Iron distance competition, she crashed her bike at mile 80 and fell unconscious for hours. Waking up in the hospital room, her perception of life changed. “In that moment it became incredibly clear that I had the opportunity, no, the responsibility, actually, to choose the life I create. I realized I was in the habit of living based on the previous decisions I had made, rather than by choosing the life I create, enjoy and actively participate in each day,” she says.
Even her career changed. After five years in strategic management consulting, she made a shift to combine her love of community, leadership and passion for an active lifestyle. She’s now an assistant store manager at lululemon athletic in Georgetown. “I love that it’s my job to help people live happy, fun, healthy lives. I am inspired every day by the athletes in our community,” she says.
She consistently maintains that positive attitude shift. “It’s not always easy, but I use gratitude to remember that it’s actually a privilege to be able to choose the components of my life, and I am lucky to be able to move my body to do all things swim/bike/run,” she says.
