REV3 Maine Triathlon, A special Race for Lauren Goss

According to Triathlete Magazine, REV3 Maine Triathlon is one of the most beautiful races in the United States. I have raced the event 2 times and I would have to say it is a beautiful place to compete. This race will always be special to me because it was my first REV3 Triathlon win.

Where to stay? Waves Oceanfront Hotel. I stayed here both years I competed and I literally was able to roll out of bed and jog to the transition area. The ocean is also 400m away so you can easily enjoy the sunset or get in an easy swim. There is no continental breakfast but there are mini fridges/ microwaves in the rooms. Some even have a stovetop. I advise packing race morning breakfast so you do not have to worry about it once you arrive. I usually bring 3/4c of old fashioned oats, mixed nuts, banana, and nut butter.

Where to eat? Both years I went to REV3 Maine Triathlon I ate my pre race meal at the Flatbread Company. It is about 20minutes away in Portland, but it is worth it!! They have really awesome brick oven pizza, organic salads, and craft beers. The restaurant is also overlooks the water and has outside seating. I would go around 5PM to beat the crowds, as it is a popular place on a Saturday night. After the race head over to Beach Street Café which is right across Grand Ave. They have really awesome crepes and a very laid back atmosphere where tri suits are welcome.

The Course starts on the beach with a sandy run-in start. The water temperature is usually right around 68F and the current can be going either way. If sighting is an issue for you then you are in luck! The swim is point to point with a giant pier at the other end so it is easy to sight. The run to transition is a little long so make sure you are familiar with it come race day so there are no surprises.

The bike course is flat, shaded, and fast! There a few holes in the road in the first few miles so I suggest checking them out so you can avoid them on race day.

The run is also shaded but is pretty challenging with a few rolling hills. I would suggest running steady up the hills and bombing the down hills to gain some time on the competition. The run is an out and back with a small gravel section at the turn around. Even though the course will be marked, check out the first mile, which is also the last mile, so that you know where to turn.
