Cameron’s Legacy:

On March 16, 2014 at the Shamrock Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, sixteen-year-old Cameron K. Gallagher passed away as she crossed the finish line from an undiagnosed heart condition. On that day Cameron struggled to finish a race that she had set as a personal goal for herself—and was victorious. But that was not the only hard fight that Cameron fought. Cameron suffered from severe depression and anxiety for several years. The ever-smiling teen was growing tired of keeping her struggle a private battle. She knew that like her, many teens were in great pain behind closed doors. As she trained for the half marathon, she took it upon herself to address the misplaced stigma held by so many about teenage depression. Her dream was to create a 5k race in her community to help raise awareness of teenage depression. She had titled that race the SpeakUp5k in order to draw attention to the issue of teen depression and to let other teens like herself know that it was okay to “Speak Up” about their personal battles. She had titled that race the SpeakUp5k. Cameron’s dream is now a legacy far greater then she ever could have imagined.

Over 10,000 community members enjoyed our kick-off event last year and we know this year will be even bigger and more fun! We are excited to announce the new venue to celebrate Cameron, her dream, her legacy and launch our 2015 SpeakUp5k!

SpeakUp Revolution will be on May 30th at the Richmond International Raceway 12-7pm. We have joined forces with Rev3 Rush to be sure to have a weekend full of fun and entertainment for the whole family.  There will be food, beer, bands and festivities for the kids. Rev3 will be holding a one of a kind triathlon throughout the weekend around the track – even bringing in a pool to the infield! Be a part of the tri or just enjoy all the excitement happening around the track. This event is for EVERYONE!

We will continue to spread Cameron’s message to bring awareness and understanding to teenage depression and anxiety, and we will do it “Cameron style” -with a smile.

Let’s celebrate this message by having a party and maybe even trying something new with Rev3 Rush.

Course Preview

REV3 Rush is a triathlon distance of 250-meter swim, 5-mile bike, and a 1.5-mile run. The swim is in a 25-meter pool constructed specifically for this event on the infield of the raceway. The bike is on the NASCAR track and allows for drafting or riding in a pack. The run circles the infield making the entire race incredibly spectator friendly. Each athlete can race a minimum of two races and a maximum of six races, with various races through the preliminary heats and relays. The fastest times will move on to a semi or final heat. Each athlete has the option of racing in a relay which is included in the athlete’s entry fee. The Elite Category finals will consist of an exciting swim/bike/run/swim/bike/run event. “When I started triathlons in 2001 I was fortunate enough to be able to compete in the super sprint series that was being run in Australia at the time, there was a steep learning curve but one that I am thankful for. The skill set you gain from the fast and furious sprint racing is invaluable, and I am excited that Rev3 is offering these same experiences for juniors as well as the pros.” ~ Mirinda Carfrae, 3x World Champion <read more>
