REV3 Triathlon race weekends are designed with not just the athlete in mind.  From the start of the weekend to the finish, it’s all about the whole athlete, including family and friends.  So, why not take advantage?  Whether you have kids or not, make one of your next Rev3 races a “just for grown-ups” play weekend.

Think about it – cool locations, awesome venues, and your significant other and/or BFF(s) with you.  Leave the kids behind and do the weekend in style.  Let’s face it, as parents, we all need that getaway and with time a precious commodity, one of the easiest ways is to combine a race with a weekend escape.  Whether you have planned a couples’ getaway, a BFF weekend, or guys/girls weekend away, the TriWives are here to tell you how to do Rev 3 races with adult-sized kid fun in mind.  Here’s how it’s done.

  • Book a nice dinner just for the two of you before or after the race.  Do some research ahead of time or check out our Food & Fun, Part 2 articles on Rev3 for some ideas.  This is a time for you to relax and maybe even have a non-triathlon related conversation.  Yes, we actually said that.
  • Check out what hotels are available in the area and what amenities they offer.  Maybe there’s a nice bed and breakfast or try and book a suite at a hotel, just to make sure you have plenty of room to hang out and chill!  Many times, finding a hotel room with a sitting area and wet bar/mini kitchen is well worth the extra money, allowing you to have snacks and light meals together.  This is especially true if you’re going as a group.  Not to mention, if you drink, you can save money by mixing your own and no designated driver needed.

  • Pre-book a fun adult activity in the area.  For this, you either have to do your research ahead of time or check out our Food & Fun, Part 1 articles on Rev3 for a list of things to do.  At Rev3 Williamsburg for instance, you can book a wine tour just minutes away at the Williamsburg Winery.  Many cities also offer culinary tours or pub-crawls to really give you a good feel for the area.  We love these tours, because they expose you to a variety of restaurants and are a fun group activity.
  • Take some time to explore the town and area the race is in.  Finding something new and special together is always a great way to connect or reconnect!
  • Register for all the race events.  REV3 Triathlon offers a glow run at almost all of their events.  Register as a couple or group and stick together in the run for fun.  We also highly recommend arranging matching outfits or ordering t-shirts for the run.  We know it’s a bit corny, but it’s not the time to worry about how you look!
  • Stop at a local market for snacks and drinks.  Make sure you are well-stocked and not just on junk food.  We love to pick up cheese and crackers, olives, nuts, fruit, and some spreads or hummus and veggies.  If you are planning a special couples race weekend trip, some chocolate and strawberries never hurt…
  • Hit the amusement park.  And we mean it.  Really, you are never too old for the rides.  Recently, we traveled to review an amusement park and let me tell you, these two TriWives were running to get on the next roller coaster before the park closed.  We do recommend that if the park has express line passes, to buy them.  They are well worth the money in saved time.

  • If you are the one racing and your significant other is supporting or friends are cheering you on, we recommend you make race day supporter bags for everyone.  These can be as simple as a bottle of water, granola bar, and piece of fruit.  If you want to get fancy, we recommend including a cowbell, race hat, little race backpack, and sunscreen.  Don’t forget to include your expected times and locations for viewing as well.  This is something that will be such a total surprise, it will earn you big kudos!
  • Race Day – Athletes: it is your day, so own it!  Just remember you have supporters out there, so smile for the camera, give high fives, and thank them for being there!  Supporters: don’t forget to be ready to cheer loudly and proudly and willing to run down that chute with your triathlete.

  • The worst thing that ever happened to us was we were having so much fun, we forgot to look up and our athlete had to yell out to us that he was passing.  So, if you are there with friends, remember to have someone designated as your triathlete spotter.
